Arsene Wenger has admitted he has not made up his mind how he will cover Lauren during his four-match ban, writes Doug Gratton.
The full-back, banned for his part in the Battle of Old Trafford, will miss Arsenal’s next Premiership match against Birmingham City tomorrow week.
With no other recognised full-back in his squad, the most obvious solution for Wenger is to shuffle his pack and bring Moritz Volz back from loan at Fulham.
But Wenger has admitted he hopes to avoid that situation.
“I am considering two options before I bring Volz back – moving Kolo out to right-back or putting Justin [Hoyte] there,” he said. “The third would be to bring Moritz back from Loftus Road.”
But he added that the benefits of bringing the full-back home could be outweighed by the effect it could have on the young defender.
“I don’t want to do that and stop him getting the experience there if I have someone here already who can fill the position,” he said.
Wenger used the last 30 minutes of Arsenal’s derby victory over Tottenham to experiment with Cygan at centre half, when he removed a subdued Lauren and switched Toure to the wing.
However, Volz has impressed since joining the West London outfit, and manager Chris Coleman has already intimated that he would consider making a permanent bid for the German-born full-back.
If Wenger does decide to leave Volz at Fulham, it raises the proposition that Arsenal could play against the Cottagers without a recognised full-back. Meanwhile, Coleman’s side would be starting with Arsenal’s only other authentic right-back.
