Arsene Wenger was adamant that Wednesday night's exertions in the UEFA Champions League were responsible for The Gunners' poor first half performance against Tottenham.
The French manager felt that his side's mental strength and determination
were the key to pulling the game around after being 1-0 down at half time.
"I feel that in the first half, we had a lot of possession but they had all
the chances," the Frenchman said.
"It was a big game on Wednesday night and we didn't look sharp enough to
create chance after chance.
"But we found the mental strength and determination to get the result."
Speaking about Tottenham's claim that Thierry Henry was in an offside
position just prior to Arsenal's equaliser, Wenger felt that the assistant
referee had got it right.
"He was surprisingly two or three yards in front, but he is so quick. Pires
did well to follow it up."
Wenger then commented about Arsenal's winner, which owed a lot to a lucky
deflection off Stephen Carr.
"Sometimes you make your luck. We had to dig deep today."
Wenger was quick to praise valiant Tottenham's performance, especially in
the first half when they could have gone into the break 3-0 up.
"Tottenham played well and it was a difficult game."
The Arsenal manager was cagey when asked whether he had thought about
recalling loan players, such as Moritz Volz at Fulham, to cover for the
upcoming suspensions.
"I don't know yet. We have to think about it hard before we make the
decision."
