"We needed that - big time," declared a satisfied Sol Campbell after Wednesday night's last-gasp victory over Dynamo Kyiv.
It was fellow defender Ashley Cole who grabbed the winner two minutes from the end of a nail-biting game at Highbury. The result was a relief for Campbell, who was beginning to fear Arsenal's Champions League frustration was set to continue.
"It was a relief," said the England defender. "We needed the win and we got it. OK it was at the death but then that is the best time to score.
"It was a frustrating game because it seemed it was not going to go our way. Little ricochets were going for them and not us. Then Ashley popped up with a massive goal for us.
"I am delighted for Ashley. He does that from time to time and it was tremendous for us. We were all up for it but when the chances weren't going for us there was a little bit of doubt as the clock ticked down. It was a relief to score and it has given us a chance now."
With their first three points of the campaign secure, Campbell is considering what will be needed to qualify through to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
"We have the ability but it just has not gone our way for whatever reason until now," he said. "But you can't keep looking at the past. When we go out there we have to have a positive attitude.
"We want to be up there. Getting to the quarters would do that but we'll probably have to win at the San Siro and our last game at home to qualify [through to the knockout stages].
"And if it happens for us in the last two minutes in each of those games then we'll take it."
