Rami Shaaban has insisted he will prove to Arsene Wenger that he is capable of being Arsenal's number one. The 28-year-old came through 90 minutes of a reserve encounter unscathed, some 11 months after suffering a serious leg injury. Shaaban has admitted there were times when he thought his career was over, but now feels confident enough to stake a claim for the Highbury number one jersey currently occupied by Jens Lehmann. "Things have changed since my injury but if I can keep training well and playing some games, then I hope to get a chance in the first team," he said after the reserves' defeat by Watford. "If I'm given that chance, I will show I can perform at the highest level. But I need more games - then it's up to the manager to decide." Looking back on his injury, Shaaban added: "There were times when I thought I would not be able to come back from the injury but everyone at Arsenal has been fantastic. "Some players are not able to play again after this sort of injury and I wasn't sure if I would or not. But the bone in my leg now feels good. "I'm delighted to be back and I feel very happy to have come through my first 90 minutes."
