PERUGIA, Italy (AP) -- Marco Di Vaio saved a below-strength Juventus from embarrassment by heading in a late goal to beat lowly Perugia 2-1 Thursday in a first-leg match of the Italian Cup quarterfinals.
Di Vaio, a substitute striker, scored in the 89th minute on a precise cross from Argentine-born teammate Mauro Camoranesi at Renato Curi stadium.
Juventus' Uruguayan forward Marcelo Zalayeta opened the scoring in the 45th on a pass from Nicola Legrottaglie. Newly signed midfielder Christian Manfredini netted the equalizer for the home team with a volley in the 66th.
Juventus, fielding several second-team players and resting such stars as Alessandro Del Piero, Pavel Nedved and David Trezeguet, was less than impressive against a team which is struggling in the Serie A.
In other quarterfinal matches played earlier this week, Udinese and Inter Milan settled with a 0-0 draw, Lazio downed Parma 2-0 and defending champion AC Milan defeated AS Roma 2-1.
Second-leg matches are scheduled from Jan. 20-22.
