At least eight Palestinians have been killed during an Israeli army raid on the Gaza Strip. Tanks, jeeps and bulldozers went into the al-Zaitoun area of Gaza City before dawn in one of the deadliest incursions in recent weeks, witnesses said. The Israeli military said there had been an alert about a possible attack on the nearby Netzarim settlement. The soldiers were met by Palestinian fighters who launched mortars, anti-tank missiles and explosive devices. The troops have now withdrawn back into the settlement, reports said. The presence of the settlers at Netzarim is loathed by the people of Gaza, says the BBC's James Rogers in Gaze. Netzarim has often been the target of gun and mortar attacks by militants during the current conflict. The settlers say they are determined to stay despite recent speculation that the Israeli Government might eventually order the area to be evacuated.
