A Palestinian student has been shot dead by Israeli troops in the West Bank town of Nablus. Roadblocks and checkpoints are a source of resentmentKamleh al-Shooli, 20, was killed when soldiers at a roadblock opened fire on a taxi taking her to the nearby al-Najah university. Israeli military sources said the taxi drove through the checkpoint and was fired on after failing to respond to warning shots by pursing troops. The taxi driver is being questioned and the Israeli army has opened an inquiry. Palestinian sources said the student who died was among eight passengers from the village of Asira al-Shamaleya who were being driven to Nablus before sunrise to avoid early Israeli patrols in the area. No-one else in the vehicle was hurt. Israel says that its roadblocks are essential to stop suicide bombers who have killed hundreds of Israelis since the start of the Palestinian uprising in September 2000. Palestinians and human rights groups describe such measures as collective punishment.
