ROME (AP) -- Defending league champion Juventus qualified for the quarterfinals of the Italian Cup downing Serie A newcomer Siena 2-1 in a third-round, second-leg match Thursday.
Goals by imaginative Alessandro Del Piero and Argentine-born midfielder Mauro German Camoranesi fired La Juve to its home win by the same score of the first-leg in Siena, lifting the Turin team to the next round on a 4-2 aggregate score.
Del Piero, whose form is improving game after game following a long injury absence, netted the opening goal in the 45th minute, starting his action from a dubious offside position and scoring with a low, precise shot.
Camoranesi, who debuted with Italy's national team this year, made it two with a diagonal shot in the 52nd minute, on a perfect assist by Uruguayan teammate Marcelo Zalayeta.
Siena got its only goal two minutes later on a penalty kick converted by striker Nicola Ventola. Igor Tudor had handed the ball inside Juventus area on a long cross.
In the closing minutes, the Juventus goalkeeper, Antonio Chimenti, salvaged the home team victory with a save on a close-range shot by Raffaele Rubino.
In late matches Thursday, AC Milan, the defending Italian Cup champion, was scheduled to play Sampdoria at San Siro and Bologna was at Udinese.
In the two-leg quarterfinals, scheduled on Jan. 14-21, Juventus will play Perugia.
Other quarterfinalist teams were Inter Milan, which escaped elimination on an injury-time goal by Argentine striker Julio Ricardo Cruz at Reggina, and league leader AS Roma, which overcame second-division Palermo on a 3-1 aggregate score on Wednesday.
