Marks out of 10 for Wales and England players from the World Cup qualifying match at the Millennium Stadium.
Match report
WALES
Danny Coyne - 8: His handling could not be faulted and he kept Wales in the game with a series of excellent saves.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rob Page - 6: Looked far from comfortable when the likes of Joe Cole ran at him but much more reliable in the air.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Danny Gabbidon - 7: A solid presence at the back who marshalled Rooney well apart from one first-half mistake.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dave Partridge - 6: Coped well with the threat of Wright-Phillips and shored up the left side well with Ricketts.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Richard Duffy - 6: The youngster acquitted himself well on the right but could not make any impression going forward.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Simon Davies - 6: Tried to bring some creativity to the middle of the park but his better work was defensive.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carl Fletcher - 6: Enjoyed his tussles with Gerrard but was sometimes left chasing shadows in central midfield.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carl Robinson - 5: Full of running but failed to make full use of possession when he did win the ball.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sam Ricketts - 6: Grew in confidence as the game went on. Got forward well on the left flank and was only let down by an occasional poor final ball.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ryan Giggs - 7: Given the freedom to roam - and he showed his quality in the final third with some testing crosses before fading slightly after the break.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John Hartson - 7: Often isolated up front but kept going. Always a threat in the air and would have scored if not for Robinson's wonder save.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Substitutes
Jason Koumas (rep Robinson, 55 mins.) - 6: Initially livened things up in midfield but could not sustain that impact.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
James Collins (rep Page, 65 mins.) - 5: His first game of the season and it showed. Guilty of some sloppy passes at first but improved towards the end.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rob Earnshaw (rep Davies, 70 mins.) - 5: Saw little of the ball. His enthusiasm deserved more than a cameo role.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ENGLAND
Paul Robinson - 7: One thing to do and it was a quite wonderful low, one-handed stop to his left from Hartson's bullet header.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Luke Young - 6: An international novice but after nervy start grew into the game and should become a squad regular.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rio Ferdinand - 6: Had his hands full with Hartson but gave the burly Welsh striker few chances and cleared up most other danger.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jamie Carragher - 5: Often so assured in Liverpool red but looked uncomfortable at the back in England white.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ashley Cole - 5: A vital headed clearance in defence denied Hartson, but otherwise failed to get into the game as he would have liked.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steven Gerrard - 6: A probing and prompting presence in midfield, but his quality was wasted on the right after second-half substitutions.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
David Beckham - 6: Showed his range of passing from the heart of midfield but struggled to stem Welsh raids in attack.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Frank Lampard - 5: Shone brightly early with an effort from distance although soon faded in the team's engine room.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shaun Wright-Phillips - 7: Energetic and effective throughout and set up Joe Cole for the goal before surprisingly being replaced after 67 minutes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joe Cole - 5: Atoned for a terrible headed miss from close range from an inviting Beckham cross with a deflected goal, but was well below his best.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wayne Rooney - 7: The attacking fulcrum of England's formation but had limited chances in front of goal and wasted a good opportunity when one-on-one.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Substitutes
Jermain Defoe - 5 (rep Wright-Phillips, 67 mins.): The diminuitive striker had few chances to impress, especially as England opted for high balls into the box.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Owen Hargreaves - 5 (rep Joe Cole, 76 mins.): His introduction failed to steady the ship in the anxious closing minutes as England's midfield was over-run.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kieran Richardson - 6 (rep Gerrard, 84 mins.): Late entry caused midfield re-shuffle and slotted in well on the left.
