John Terry has admitted that he would love to captain England after growing into the role with West London outfit Chelsea.
The centre back has been an inspirational figure at Stamford Bridge this season, and has led by example as Jose Mourinho's side have dominated the domestic agenda.
Star performances in the UEFA Champions League have also marked the 24-year-old out as a future world star, although he must first displace either Sol Campbell or Rio Ferdinand from the England first eleven.
Terry started alongside Ferdinand in the 4-0 win over Northern Ireland after Campbell was ruled out through injury, and will be offered another chance to prove himself against Azerbaijan on Wednesday.
The ambitious stopper has now targeted a future role as England captain, although will undoubtedly face competition from the likes of Ferdinand and Michael Owen when David Beckham relinquishes the role.
As well as praising the current skipper, Terry was confident in his ability to fulfil the demanding position at some point in the future.
"I have the qualities to be England captain, at club level I've stepped up to being captain and feel very privileged to be so," said Terry.
"My team-mates speak well of me and I try to be a leader around the place and help out the lads.
"If someone needs to get told then I do it, no matter who they are.
"It would mean an awful lot to anyone to be England captain but, at the present time, I think we've got a great one in David Beckham.
"It will be a good few years before anyone gets the armband off him I think."
