David James admits he is frustrated and annoyed that Paul Robinson has ousted him from the England number one slot.
The Manchester City keeper is in a difficult position because he does not want to wish ill of his international colleague, but the former Liverpool man believes his form merits a recall to the starting line-up.
James has produced some stunning displays this term, most notably at Chelsea, but is still being overlooked, largely due to his huge mistake in the draw in Austria.
"The way that I've prepared this season for every game, if you like, has been just about right," he told Sky Sports News.
"Unfortunately, the Austria performance, the second half especially, wasn't right and it cost me my place.
"But I'm confident I can reproduce my good form, enough to warrant selection and that's what it's got to be.
"I want to play in the World Cup finals. In order to do that, I've got to play for England and, in order to do that, the sooner the better as far as I'm concerned.
"There's two ways of me getting my place back - either through bad performances on Paul's behalf or through injury.
"I wouldn't wish either on him because, ultimately, it would affect him as a person and he's a decent guy, and it would affect England's performances.
"I still sit there with frustration, thinking I want to play but, at the same time, I've got to accept I might not be playing.
"If there is going to be an influence via training performances then I want to put myself in the frame.
When the team is announced and I'm not playing, then I plan to come on after a minute because that can happen.
"When the final whistle goes and I haven't played, I get annoyed."
