news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/england/3679479.stmMiddlesbrough boss Steve McClaren could return as England assistant coach if Brian Kidd fails to recover from his cancer surgery in time for Euro 2004. McClaren, part of England's backroom set-up at the World Cup before quitting to concentrate on Boro, revealed Sven-Goran Eriksson had been in touch. "It's hypothetical at the moment," admitted McClaren, who did not rule out a return to the international scene. "I spoke to Sven and it was just a general chat." He added: "Brian is the coach and hopefully he will make a speedy recovery." Kidd has undergone surgery last week for prostate cancer and his availability for England's first match against France in five weeks time is in doubt McClaren is understood to have signed a contract to act as a television summariser for the tournament, but will be allowed to go with England if need be.
