A number of Wales stars could be set to call time on their international careers if John Toshack succeeds Mark Hughes as boss of the national team.
Toshack, who was in charge of the side for 48 days back in 1994, is understood to be the FAW's favourite to take charge.
Hughes is stepping down from his position following Wales' clash against Poland on Wednesday to concentrate on his duties with Blackburn Rovers.
Toshack has been one of Hughes's and the squad's fiercest of critics of late and is believed to be an unpopular choice with a number of stars.
Bolton Wanderers midfielder Gary Speed and a number of his team-mates are understood to be unhappy about the prospect of working under Toshack and he took a swipe at the so-called 'experts' within the Welsh game.
"It is irritating," explained Speed. "It is easy to sit on the other side of the fence and criticise.
"There would appear to be a lot of fantastic managers in Wales and it's amazing how we haven't done anything in world football when there are some many experts out there.
"But that's the easy thing to do in football. It is easy to stay away from it and sit there and criticise.
"With hindsight, it's easy. I don't take any notice of it and don't have a problem with it."
Newcastle star Craig Bellamy does not want any corners cut and believes someone should be appointed for the long-term in order to forge an understanding with the players.
"We don't want someone who is just going to be around for a year, we want some continuity like we had with Mark Hughes," said Bellamy.
