IT COULD have been Arsenal v Porto in Gelsenkirchen.
Arsenal should have beaten Chelsea, and they would probably have beaten Monaco.
Having said that, this guy Didier Deschamps is something else.
We've read about Deschamps and Desailly being 15 together at Nantes.
And Desailly cried and cried when his mate left.
Deschamps made his debut for France in 1989 and won his first French league title with Marseille in 1990 and won the European Cup with Marseille in 1991 and joined Juventus and won three Serie A titles and become captain of France in 1996 and led them to a World Cup victory in 1998 and then won Euro 2004 as well.
DESCHAMPS is a winner with 102 caps, 55 as captain.
That's what I call a career !
At 32 he phones Monaco to ask for a job as a player and they hire him as a manager and now at 35 he has guided them to a European Cup Final!
CAN THEY BEAT PORTO?
Yes. They have more goalscorers - Morientes, Giuly, Nonda, Prso and Rothen.
Morientes has scored nine goals in the tournament already and one more on Wednesday night could give him his fourth European Cup.
Mourinho has built a compact Porto team whose short-passing skills and tenacity are second to none.
Ranieri reckons the key man is Costina, who will get between Giuly and Morientes and prevent them passing to each other.
PORTO have beaten Man United and Deportivo La Coruna to get this far, so they are good enough to win it and they could be the first side since Liverpool to win the UEFA Cup and European Cup in consecutive years.
Liverpool did that in 1976 and 1977.
Porto have that UEFA final under their belts and they have more internationals.
But I'm going with Rothen and Morientes.
I fancy them, big time.
It might be a one-goal game, and it might be one of my favourite players, Costinha or Deco, who scores it, but I have a gut feeling that Deschamps will be a winner again.
The record says that Deschamps was 15 when he was at Nantes with Desailly.
But I don't believe that.
Didier Deschamps was never 15.
He was 35 then. I'm sure he was 35 then.
Deschamps was never a naive young footballer. He didn't have to grow up and get serious because he was already a man.
