Scotland and Wales are 90 minutes from a place in the next summer's European Championship final.
The Scots travel to Amsterdam for the second leg of their Euro 2004 play-off with Holland, protecting a precious 1-0 lead from Saturday's game at Hampden.
Wales take on Russia at the Millennium Stadium, looking to build on the foundations they put in place with a battling goalless draw in Moscow.
Victory for Mark Hughes' team would secure Wales a first qualification for a major championship since 1958.
Scotland have not played in a major finals since Euro 96.
But the 1-0 lead carved out by James McFadden's goal at Hampden Park looks even more solid following a row in the Dutch camp.
Holland's players were accused of excessive partying following Saturday's game and coach Dick Advocaat is set to drop up to five players for the second leg.
"The pressure is only on the Dutch, on the Dutch players and on Dutch football," insisted Scotland coach Bertie Vogts.
"We have to score - then we will have a big, big chance and the door is wide open for Portugal.
"It will be a big, big day for my boys - and maybe a historic day."
Wales, too, are hoping to make history, but coach Hughes is sweating on the fitness of Ryan Giggs.
The Manchester United winger has been cleared to play despite facing a charge of improper conduct following a clash with Russia defender Vadim Evseev.
But fitness could still rule him out, with a shin injury still causing some concern
"Ryan has only been able to do a light warm-up in training," said Hughes.
"He has lacerations right down his shin, and there is always the danger of infection."
But Cardiff striker Robert Earnshaw is fit to play in his home city, giving Hughes a major selection dilemma up front.
In Wednesday night's remaining three play-off matches, Latvia have the chance to qualify for their first-ever European Championship as they take a 1-0 lead into the second-leg of their match against Turkey.
Spain carry a 2-1 lead into their second leg against Norway in Oslo.
Slovenia are aiming to reach a major championship for the third time in a row at the expense of Croatia.
