eleven-a-side.com/boysingreen/irish_soccer_detail.asp?newsid=21356Irish international goalkeeper Shay Given, the new senior Irish Player of the Year, indicated that he would NOT be the new Republic of Ireland captain at Sunday night’s eircom/FAI awards ceremony in Dublin. Given was named International Player of the Year for the first time in his career at the annual televised awards ceremony at the Citywest Hotel. But when asked by RTE’s Darragh Maloney about the prospects of taking over the armband from the retired Kenny Cunningham, Given – seen by many as the natural next skipper – ruled himself out of the equation. He said: “I’m sure whoever it is will do a great job. But if won’t be me.”
