eleven-a-side.com/boysingreen/irish_soccer_detail.asp?newsid=21355Goalkeeper Shay Given was named eircom/FAI International Player of the Year for 2005 at the annual awards ceremony in Dublin on Sunday night. Given had been nominated on previous occasions, but this was his first time to land the top award in Irish soccer. The Newcastle United man enjoyed a stunning year in the green, producing a string of top-class performances to keep Ireland in the running for World Cup qualification. His efforts proved in vain as failure to beat Switzerland at home in October saw Ireland eliminated, and Brian Kerr replaced as Irish manager by Given’s former international teammate Steve Staunton. Neither has Given’s form been restricted to the international arena – he has regularly proved his excellence for Newcastle United, and is considered by many to be the top goalkeeper in the Premiership. WELL DONE SHAY THAT MAN ;D
