The Republic of Ireland lost 1-0 in their final Uefa Under-21 Championship qualifier against Switzerland, despite an encouraging display at Tolka Park.
Don Givens' side have now failed to register a win in nine games.
David Degen scored the winner on 13 minutes, cutting across Paul McShane before firing a low shot from eight yards past goalkeeper Wayne Henderson.
Joe O'Brien, Steven Ward, Willo Flood, John Fitzgerald and Jay Tabb all had chances to equalise for the Republic.
O'Brien blazed over the bar early on and after the Swiss took the lead, he saw his low drive fly past the left-hand post.
Reto Ziegler was wide with an effort for Switzerland, and Alain Rochat curled a 20-yard free-kick inches over the bar.
Just before the break, Ward's effort was blocked at point-blank range by visiting goalkeeper Diego Benaglio.
After half-time Benaglio dived full-length to deny John Fitzgerald's looping header.
Henderson pulled off the save of the game in the 82nd minute, acrobatically turning aside a Ziegler 25-yard left-foot volley.
In the dying moments, Tabb and Flood came close to giving the Republic a thoroughly-merited point.
