United stalwart Gary Kelly branded Leeds' performance at Leicester City as "muck" and admitted the club may have to settle for finishing in the play-offs.
The Whites had given themselves a real chance of catching second placed Sheffield United after the midweek win over Watford left them just nine points behind with a game in hand and a trip to Sheffield United to come.
But after only managing to draw 1-1 at relegation battling Leicester, who played most of the game with just ten men, and the Blades having won the Steel City derby at Hillsborough, the chance to keep up the pressure on Neil Warnock's men appears to have gone.
Kelly, approaching his 500th appearance for the club, said the whole team had let themselves down at the Walkers Stadium.
"The point was good but our performance from start to finish was absolute muck.
"I wish I could speak my mind but it would not look good in print because were not at the races on the day. Leicester deserved to win and could have nicked it in the end and we deserved to be booed off by the 3,000 Leeds fans on the day.
"sometimes it's hard to play against fewer men but we just never turned up on Saturday. It would have been daylight robbery if we had won the game because we just didn't deserve to.
"Everyone from Sully, Kells, through the whole team, we were just poor and we are sick at having missed an opportunity."
Agreeing with his manager, Kelly denied there had been a problem with the effort and commitment shown by Leeds on the day, but they lacked the guile needed to create good chances for themselves.
"Every one of the lads in there would run through a brick wall for this club but sometimes you just need that little bit more quality, even from the experienced lads.
"There's not a big hole in the ship or anything, we are still motoring and we will concentrate on ourselves and look towards guaranteeing a place in the play-offs - anything above that is a bonus.
"It's all about bouncing back now and we have seen from Reading's defeat to Luton that any team can beat another."
