news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/republic_of_ireland/3885285.stmA north-south competition could be a runner if proposals considered during the Football Association of Ireland's annual general meeting are accepted. Cross-border competition involving Eircom League and Irish League clubs was on the agenda at the agm which was held in Londonderry for the first time. Fran Rooney, chief executive of the FAI, said that there could be news of a new competition soon. ''We have not yet decided the format of the tournament,'' said Rooney. ''We do not know how many teams will be involved, but the FAI has secured substantial sponsorship. ''I would be hopeful that an announcement would be made within the next few weeks.'' It is believed that the competition will involve two or three clubs from each Premiership League as well as the FAI and Irish Cup winners.
