United will have to do without the services of defender Matthew Kilgallon for tomorrow's derby clash with Sheffield Wednesday, and could be missing players in midfield too.
The former England under-21 international took a bang on the knee in Tuesday night's FA Cup game with Wigan and is waiting for the results of a scan to determine how serious the injury is.
United boss Kevin Blackwell did though completely rule him out for tomorrow's game at Elland Road, and is now keeping his fingers crossed that the centre-half, who has been outstanding in recent games, will not be out for long.
Blackwell also faces an anxious wait to see if Eddie Lewis and Liam Miller will be available after they came off on Tuesday with injuries.
"They have responded quite well but it is too close to call at the moment and we shall make a decision on them nearer the time," he said.
Simon Walton took the place of midfielder Shaun Derry on Tuesday night after the former Palace man picked up an injury ahead of the game and was not risked, and Blackwell was impressed with how Walton performed.
The teenager has played in three different positions already during his fledgling career at Elland Road, centre-half, right-back and in midfield, and the boss knows he can rely on him to come in and provide good cover - but he'll leave it until tomorrow before deciding on where that will be.
"Simon becomes a very valuable member of the team now," said Blackwell.
"People forget he has only turned 18 but he was like a seasoned pro out there against Wigan, and he hasn't been given the credit he deserves.
"He could play centre-half or midfield and we're talking about an 18-year-old kid and that is such a big thing for me to be able to say that about him. I know he will handle either position."
Rob Hulse is suspended for the game after picking up five yellow cards for the season, the last of which came against Brighton last weekend.
His absence means Richard Cresswell returns to the starting line-up against one of his former teams.
New signing Joel Griffiths has not received his international clearance in time to play against Wednesday and is now hoping to feature in Monday evening's reserve game at Bolton.
