Speculation in Irish football circles that all was not well in the Republic of Ireland squad before last Wednesday's 2-1 defeat of the Czech Republic at Lansdowne Road continues unabated having first surfaced at lunchtime on Wednesday but sources say the reports are somewhat wide of the mark.
The starting eleven had appeared on soccercentral.ie just before 1pm on the afternoon of the game (31/3/04) when traditionally Kerr held out until just before kick-off to announce line-up, though on occasion the starting 11 for friendlies has appeared a little earlier.
Surprise that Carr 's name was not included began to raise eyebrows and when the FAI then issued a press release with the line-up some 50 minutes later stating Carr had returned to London with a knee injury, though it has been reported that the Dubliner took a knock in training following a tackle by Ian Harte, further inflamed the gossip.
That Carr was able to turn out and play a full 90 minutes in yesterday game for THFC as they lost to Chelsea has also served to raise rumblings to a higher intensity.
Some annoyance was expressed by some of the players that they firstly were unable to hear what was being said during training with so much noise being generated by the numbers observing the open public session. They were then delayed signing autographs for the many children who turned up at the Carlisle Grounds on Tuesday before the coach returning them to Killiney broke down.
It is understood that team captain Kenny Cunningham approached Kerr with the players concerns and that the manager acknowledged them.
An Football Association of Ireland spokesman would neither confirm nor deny the stories to soccercentral except to say "matters within the squad are between the manager and the players and preparations for matches are regularly reviewed between the manager and the FAI."
