Steve McQueen was second in the actors list, followed by Welsh star Richard Burton, who received seven nominations for performances in films including Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Equus.
Sharon Stone, who was nominated for an Oscar in 1996 for Casino but walked away empty-handed, was second in the actress list.
Despite winning no Academy Awards, Alfred Hitchcock won a 1958 Golden Globe Award for his television show Alfred Hitchcock presents, and the event's Cecil B DeMille Award in 1972.
A TCM spokesman said: "The poll shows an encouraging amount of support and loyalty from the UK public for many British actors and filmmakers."
British director Scorsese may be nominated for an Oscar this year for his Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator, which has already won three Golden Globe Awards and a Producers Guild of America award.
This year's Academy Award nominations will be announced on Tuesday.
