United boss Kevin Blackwell offered no excuses after Leeds' dismal 1-0 home defeat to Cardiff City on Saturday.
The Whites were beaten by a spectacular Jason Koumas free-kick in the first half but it was a game where the home side failed to show any of the good play that saw them go on a four game winning spree and earn plenty of plaudits before the Bluebirds' visit.
At full time the team were booed off and results elsewhere saw Watford leapfrog them into third place whilst the top two, Sheffield United and Reading, extended their lead.
Blackwell was at a loss to explain how his team turned out such a poor performance.
"The frustrating thing is we don't know where that performance came from," he said.
"That won't get you promotion that's for sure, and I won't say the players were looking jaded or anything because there are no excuses. We were rubbish from start to finish.
"They have been playing well and collectively as a unit it's very rare to see them all have an off day. I thought our passing was poor, our movement was poor, the hunger wasn't there.
"Everything that can be poor in the game we saw from Leeds on Saturday."
The boss will not though produce a knee-jerk reaction to the result, he will give the players the chance to redeem themselves next week at Wolves.
"I am annoyed with them but they have put us in a great position and I am not going to dismantle everything we built because of one poor result, but it's still not good enough to send the fans home with that dross.
"I am not having teams like Cardiff coming to Elland Road and being the better side. To say I am disappointed is an understatement.
"We are back at work this morning and will make sure we are better than that."
