Champions League, Gp H Matchday 6 - 10/12/08 (17.30 UK)
Juventus 0 - 0 BATE
Stadio Olimpico
Sebastian Giovinco missed a penalty, but the 0-0 with BATE Borisov is still enough for Juventus to top Group H.
The Bianconeri were already qualified, but only needed a point to be sure of topping the group ahead of Real Madrid. Alessandro Del Piero and Giorgio Chiellini were rested, Momo Sissoko was suspended and the injury list included Gigi Buffon, David Trezeguet, Tiago Mendes, Christian Poulsen, Jonathan Zebina, Mauro Camoranesi, Hasan Salihamidzic and Dario Knezevic. The good news was that Cristiano Zanetti made his first appearance since July after finally recovering from his thigh problems.
BATE knew they'd be bottom of the group regardless of this result and play was able to go ahead after heavy snow melted in time for kick-off in Turin.
Amauri nodded a Sebastian Giovinco corner off target, while the Atomic Ant stumbled in the box. Nicola Legrottaglie needed a sliding tackle to cut short Rodionov's progress in the Juve penalty area on 16 minutes.
Giovinco's free kick skimmed the upright from a similar position to the goal he scored on Saturday against Lecce. Alex Manninger smothered a clumsy set play from Sivakov.
Under-21 international Giovinco was determined to prove himself and his shot was deflected out for a corner, from which Amauri failed to connect.
Manninger closed down Rodionov as he rushed into the box, but Giovinco continued to pepper the BATE area with free kicks and in a lovely move flicked the ball over his marker to get away and drilled just wide of the upright.
Marco Marchionni went so close to opening the scoring at the dawn of the second half, as he got to Amauri's cross and the goalkeeper was beaten, but the header thumped the upright!
Moments later Sivakov handled in the box and, in Del Piero's absence, Giovinco took on the penalty duties. However, the youngster ballooned his spot-kick over the bar! It was a hesitant run-up and the finish was well over the target, as he tried to chip it under the bar.
Del Piero replaced Amauri to create an all-new partnership with Giovinco. Within seconds Nedved had fired straight at the goalkeeper after some excellent build-up down the right channel from Giovinco, as he slalomed past BATE shirts.
Rodionov nodded over and Giovinco's free kick was deflected on to the side-netting first by a defender and then Del Piero.
Another Nedved effort was caught by the 'keeper and Giovinco again drilled just wide, while Khagush and Paolo De Ceglie had shots charged down by opponents.
Incredibly, BATE threatened to take the lead 12 minutes from time with their first real attempt. Bliznyuk nutmegged Zanetti and flashed a dangerous shot across the face of goal, skimming the far post.
The visitors also claimed Olof Mellberg had handled in the box, while Veremko smothered Zanetti's snapshot from distance.
Juventus had a fantastic scoring opportunity moments later, as Del Piero combined with Marchionni and nodded the chipped pass from six yards, bringing a great reaction save out of Veremko.
Del Piero turned another header off target from Marchionni's cross and Giovinco made way for another youth product, Simone Esposito, while teen Castiglia replaced Nedved.
Deep into stoppages BATE had a free kick that Nekhaychik blasted over the bar from 20 metres.
