(1330 - 1376) Edward, Prince of Wales, is remembered by some as a great chivalric hero of British history, and an able commander with notable victories at the Battles of Crecy and Poitiers. The son of Edward III, king of England from 1327, he himself never ruled as king because he died a year before his father. His military career included at least one act of barbarism: the slaughter of 3,000 civilians at Limoges in 1370. And, despite his courage and conviction in the war against France and the conquering of Normandy, he opposed his father's policy towards the end of his reign. In 1362 he married Joan of Kent. Their son, became King Richard II and ruled between 1377-99.
