The Son of Sam.
Wrote a letter to police while he terrorized the city with a handgun in the late 1970s. He scrawled:
"Let me haunt you with these words: I'll be back! I'll be back! To be interpreted as bang, bang, bang, bang, bang - ugh!!"
At the scene of one double murder, a note was found, which said
"I am the Son of Sam, I am a little brat."
Calling himself "the Son of Sam" in a letter left at one of the crime scenes, Berkowitz claimed voices were ordering him to kill.
'Won't Let Me Stop Killing' -- For 13 months, July, 1976 - August, 1977, New York City was terrorized by the Son of Sam. He shot to death 6 people, 5 of them young women and wounded 7 others. He struck at young couples in lovers' lanes. He used a .44-cal. revolver, which earned him the title "44-caliber killer."
Women were his target but boyfriends sometimes got in the way.
Son of Sam -- Captain Joseph Borrelli of the New York City Police Department a key member of the Omega Group. Operation Omega was the task force to find the psycho killing women with a .44 caliber handgun.
Berkowitz made the avoidable mistake of parking illegally. When a witness reported a dark figure carrying a traffic ticket, police were led to the murderer.
If the Son of Sam hadn't been a serial killer, he'd have been a regular guy -- but then, he wouldn't be the subject of a movie, either.
A quarter of a century after his arrest, Berkowitz is regularly interviewed on US television and continues to make front page news in The Big Apple. His victims are sadly forgotten by all except their close relatives.
"There were others who knew about them and urged me on. But I carried out the killings. I take full responsibility for my actions."
