Vijay Singh revelled in his status as the new world number one after winning the Deutsche Bank Championship by two shots in Boston on Monday.
"It feels great. I can't wait to celebrate," said Singh, who replaces Tiger Woods at the top of the rankings.
"I've worked pretty hard for this. I finally achieved what I wanted to do starting at the beginning of the year.
"It was a good win. Coming down the stretch got pretty tight there, but I played pretty good coming down."
The 41-year-old Fijian finished on 16 under par for the tournament, three shots ahead of Woods.
Singh added: "It was a golf tournament to me. It wasn't about the ranking.
"It wasn't about going out there and trying to beat Tiger and beat the number one player.
"I was out there trying to win the golf tournament and that was my goal starting out today.
"I enjoy playing with Tiger. It is intense. He is a very intense player and he makes you know that.
"So you just have to go out there and play your own game and beat him and that is the only way to play."
Woods, who was ranked the world's best golfer for five years and four weeks, was philosophical about dropping to second spot.
"That's not too bad, is it?" Woods said. "I've had a good run.
"I'm not disappointed about the ranking. I'm disappointed in not winning. Winning takes care of the ranking.
"This is the best ball-striking week I have had all year, and unfortunately I did not win because I did not play the par-fives well at all in the final round.
"But I'm excited about what I'm working on. I can't wait to get playing again."
