news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympics_2004/athletics/3599598.stmBritain's Ricky Soos ran a brilliant personal best to reach the semi-finals of the 800m from a tough heat. Soos took the scalp of world champion Djabir Said Guerni as he qualified in one minute 45.70 seconds. Soos said: "The plan was to get up there and just relax, hang in there and come through in the home straight. "I've come strong through the end of the season and now I've got a decent chance of making the final - I just have to run another good race." Former world champion Wilson Kipketer and Russia's talented Yuriy Borzakovskiy were the most impressive of the other qualifiers. But Youssef Saad Kamel, son of legendary world champion Billy Konchellah and fancied by some as an outside chance for gold, went out after finishing third in the final heat. Reigning Olympic champion Nils Schumann is missing Athens after operations on both Achilles tendons.
