Kate Allen won the women's triathlon title with a stunning 10km run to beat Loretta Harrop by just seven seconds.
The Austrian began the final leg in 28th place but charged through the field in a time almost three minutes faster than Harrop.
After a poor campaign Britain's hockey team have capped their Olympics with a 4-1 victory over Argentina.
The win moves the team into a play-off for ninth place against South Africa.
And the triathlon is not the sole preserve of shocks.
Heavyweight wrestler Rulon Gardner, the Greco-Roman defending champion, lost to Kazakhstan's Georgiy Tsurtsumia in the semi-finals.
Later in the day there is a gold up for grabs in the men's Madison final where Bradley Wiggins, in partnership with the Rob Hayles, will be going for his second title and third medal of the Games.
There are also three athletics finals - the women's 400m hurdles, the women's hammer and the women's 200m.
Jamaica's Veronica Campbell qualified in the fastest time, but hopes are high that Britain's Abi Oyepitan could claim a medal after an impressive run in her heat.
The USA's Marion Jones misses out on the defence of her 200m crown, but will be in action in the long jump qualification along with Great Britain's Jade Johnson.
Great Britain's Darren Campbell has confirmed he will run in the 200m semi-finals despite a hamstring problem.
He will be joined by compatriot Christian Malcolm, although American Shawn Crawford looks the form man.
Elsewhere, the world's unofficial strongest man, Hossein Rezazadeh, nicknamed the "Iranian Hercules", will defend his Olympic title in weightlifting's +105kg category.
