Britain's Dean Macey has made a fine start to the decathlon, moving up to seventh place after three events.
Macey, who has suffered a terrible run of injuries, held his form well to finish fourth in his 100m heat in a time of 10.89 seconds for 885 points.
In the long jump, Macey jumped 7.47m with his first attempt for 927 points to move him up from 15th place.
He began the shot put with a throw of 15.73m, earning 835 points for an overall total of 2647.
Macey, who finished fourth at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, is only competing in his second decathlon in three years.
There were fears that Macey had aggravated an injury after he opted against taking his other two jumps in the long jump.
But his excellent showing in the shot put seems to have alleviated those concerns.
"Before the 100m I was joking around saying I was going to run 10.89 secs," said Macey.
"I know I had a tail wind but I was really looking for about 11 secs dead so I am really pleased with that.
"The long jump was unlucky because I had a two-metre headwind and stretching for the board there were not many people who were going to jump 7.47m.
"I am really pleased with the shot and I have to give that one to the crowd - they were amazing shouting my name as soon as I came out."
Bryan Clay of the USA leads the way with 2843 points after three good displays.
Estonia's Erki Nool, the defending champion, has been off the pace and is back in 10th place.
Former world champion Tomas Dvorak withdrew after limping in last in his 100m heat with an Achilles tendon injury.
"It hurt after 10 steps - I can't compete with this injury," said Dvorak.
There are two events - the high jump and 400m - to come on Monday.
1. Bryan Clay (USA) 2843 pts
2. Dmitriy Karpov (Kaz) 2834
3. Roman Sebrle (Cze) 2787
4. Chiel Warners (Ned) 2700
5. Tom Pappas (USA) 2673
6. Jaakko Ojaniemi (Fin) 2656
7. Dean Macey (GB) 2647
