Phelps, who has already won three gold and two bronze medals in Athens as he targets eight in all, comfortably won the first semi-final. American Ryan Lochte was second in 1:59.58, while Luszlo Cseh of Hungary won the second semi in 1:59.65 ahead of Brazilian Thiago Pereira. Britons Robin Francis and Adrian Turner both finished last in the two semis. Francis suffered a piece of ill fortune when his goggles snapped as the swimmers were called to their blocks. "How unlucky can you get?" he reflected. "I had to go in without them and couldn't see anything with my eyes open. "It's not what you want to happen in the semi-finals of an Olympics. I knew I could make that final but that's the way it goes."
