news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympics_2004/swimming/3575398.stmBritish duo James Goddard and Gregor Tait both made it through to the semi-finals of the men's 200m backstroke in impressive style. The pair were drawn in the same heat and Goddard set a fast pace to win in one minute 57.96 seconds - the second fastest time of the five heats. Tait was just behind his compatriot in 1.59.35 - the fifth fastest time. The 100m backstroke champion American Aaron Peirsol was quickest into Wednesday night's semis in 1:57.33. "I had to attack the heats to make sure of reaching the semis because there are some big guns out there," said Manchester-based Goddard. "I feel okay and that was the second best time. I'm not usually a good heats swimmer but you've got to be solid and consistent. "I'm not counting my chickens, this is the Olympics and anything can happen." Tait, like Goddard, making his Olympic debut, added: "I'm delighted with that, it was one of the quickest times and I'm comfortably through and I'll just take it from there."
