Soham murderer Ian Huntley may be questioned by police over a series of revelations he allegedly made during taped conversations at his prison.
Cambridgeshire Police are reviewing a transcript of discussions the killer is said to have had with a relative.
Details of the tapes, which include comments about the death of Jessica Chapman, have been printed in the Sun.
Police said interviewing Huntley about the tapes was one of the options they were considering.
The 30-year-old was jailed for life after being found guilty last December of murdering Jessica and her friend Holly Wells, who were both aged 10, in Soham, Cambridgeshire, in August 2002.
CPS review
On the tapes, Huntley is said to have admitted that Jessica died in his living room and not his bathroom as he had insisted during his Old Bailey trial.
A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Police said: "We are looking carefully at the transcript we now have of the taped discussions that Huntley had with, as I understand it, a member of his family.
"We are examining a number of options and one of those includes interviewing Huntley."
The Crown Prosecution Service said it had had initial contact with Cambridgeshire Police and would review any future evidence.
Huntley has always maintained that Holly died accidentally in his bath and Jessica was inadvertently killed as he tried to silence her screams.
In the tapes, however, Huntley is said to have stated that Jessica went into the living room after Holly was killed and he tried to stop her leaving the house.
He reportedly said: "I don't know what was going through my head. I certainly don't recall thinking 'I've got to kill her to stop her leaving'."
Huntley also reportedly said in the tapes that he had switched off Jessica's mobile phone as she was trying to call someone.
And he claimed that he would go on hunger strike in two weeks' time in an attempt to kill himself.
'More pain'
In the wake of the newspaper revelations, on Thursday the Prison Service announced a review into the way phone calls to Huntley are recorded.
Cambridgeshire Police also said that his comments added to the confusion surrounding what really happened to the girls.
A spokesman said: "All we want and all the families want is the truth.
"So far, all we've had is several different versions of events from Huntley - this just causes more and more pain for Holly and Jessica's parents."
In Saturday's edition of the Sun, Huntley is said to have moaned about conditions in Wakefield prison, west Yorkshire.
He also expressed his surprise that he had survived a suicide attempt at another prison in June last year.
Huntley's ex-fiancée Maxine Carr, 27, was sentenced to three-and-a-half years for conspiring with Huntley to pervert the course of justice.
