Pop superstar Britney Spears has married a childhood friend in Las Vegas, according to news reports.
The 22-year-old singer got hitched to friend Jason Allen Alexander, 22, on Saturday, reports said.
But the marriage was a joke that went too far, celebrity news web site People.com says, and is already in the process of being annulled.
In July, Spears admitted losing her viriginity after years of speculation about her self-proclaimed chastity.
Non-stop weddings
The singer famously said she would remain a virgin until she got married, making her a role model for the pro-chastity movement in the United States.
One of the biggest-selling female stars in music history, Spears has been trying to redefine her image from that of innocent teen idol to raunchy sex icon.
The chapel has celebrated many celebrity nuptials
Her reported wedding, in jeans and baseball cap, took place in the early hours of Saturday at the Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas.
The venue is open 24 hours a day, all year round. It is where a raft of celebrities from Joan Collins, Judy Garland, Dixie Chick Natalie Maines to Bruce Willis and Demi Moore have tied the knot.
People.com quoted sources close to Spears as saying the couple acted on the spur of the moment while out partying in Las Vegas and that it was a joke that went too far.
Arrangements are already under way to have the marriage annulled, reports said.
Album success
Calls to her representatives to confirm the wedding reports were not immediately returned, the Associated Press reported.
But the Las Vegas Review -Journal's website has what it says it a copy of an application filed for a marriage licence by Spears and Allen, both from Kentwood, Louisiana, on 3 January.
It would be the first marriage for each.
Spears released her fourth album, In the Zone, in November.
It was not well received by critics but it went straight in at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart.
Since 1999, the singer has sold more than 54 million albums around the world.
