The BBC's revamped Top of the Pops show drew an extra two million viewers for Friday's live relaunch.
The BBC One show peaked at 6.1 million viewers and drew an average of 5.5 million for the one-hour special.
It was fronted by Tim Kash, 22, and the line-up included Kylie Minogue, Sir Elton John, Mis-Teeq and Will Young.
Its producer, Andi Peters, is aiming to build up the audience for the veteran show, which was previously at 3.5 million per week.
A Top of the Pops spokesman said: "We are really pleased that people seemed to like the show."

The revised format included a mixture of live and pre-recorded material, as well as new set with all-white stages and interviews with Gareth Gates, Kelly Osbourne and Victoria Beckham.
The singles and album chart were also featured, along with music news, competitions and 15 different performances.
And phone-in competitions, footage from behind the scenes and news from the music industry were also part of the new-look show.
However the relaunch was hit with the late withdrawal of a Michael Jackson video because it was not ready for broadcast.

And the show ended in embarrassment when wrong answers were initially shown on screen in a Robbie Williams competition with a prize to Australia.
However this was rectified by Kash before the winner was announced.
Peters was brought into the BBC to give Top of the Pops a change of image after viewing figures dropped amid competition from other music shows.
He said the fact that singles sales had fallen sharply in recent years showed there was a need to offer different types of music, including album tracks and unreleased tunes.
The All New Top of the Pops will now be broadcast live every Friday on BBC One at 7.30pm.
