Feelgood film Love Actually has scored the highest UK opening weekend takings of any British romantic comedy. The movie, starring Hugh Grant and Martine McCutcheon, has taken £6.6m across the country since Friday. It beat the opening weekend box office receipts of previous British hits Bridget Jones's Diary and Notting Hill. Bridget Jones's Diary took £5.7m when it opened, while Notting Hill took £4.3m. The Matrix Revolutions, last week's top film, had opening takings of £8.7m. Love Actually marks the directorial debut of Richard Curtis, writer of Bridget Jones's Diary, Notting Hill and Four Weddings and Funeral. Following its strong debut, it is expected to become one of the most successful British films of all time. It is the highest UK opening takings for the companies behind the film - Working Title, Universal Pictures and United International Pictures. The film follows eight couples dealing with their love lives in loosely-related stories during a frantic week before Christmas in London. Its all-star cast also includes Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth and Bill Nighy.
