Soul singer Luther Vandross, who is recovering from a stroke, received two prizes at the American Music Awards. The 52-year-old was named best male R&B performer, while Dance With My Father was named favourite soul-R&B album. The singer's mother, Mary Vandross, represented him at the ceremony staged in Los Angeles on Sunday. Rapper 50 Cent also won two American Music Awards - best male rap artist and best rap/hip-hop album for Get Rich Or Die Tryin'. Jennifer Lopez won the award for favourite pop or rock female artist, while Justin Timberlake won for favourite pop or rock album for Justified. Fleetwood Mac took home the award for favourite pop or rock band, while US singer Kid Rock won for favourite pop or rock artist. The singer Aaliyah, killed in a 2001 plane crash, won for favourite female soul or R&B artist. Ricky Martin won the award for Latin artist of the year. Winners of the annual American Music Awards, which celebrated their 31st year on Sunday, are selected by US music fans through ballots from a national sampling of about 20,000 members of the public. Soul legend Vandross, 52, fell ill in April after a blood vessel ruptured in his brain and he was hit by meningitis and pneumonia. According to a recent report in the US, friends and family said he was singing again six months after suffering a stroke.
