Thousands of visitors to the National Gallery in central London had to be led to safety after a fire broke out in a basement storeroom.
Firefighters using a water hose reel put out the fire which began at about 1340 GMT in a store which was being renovated.
An estimated 25% of the basement store was damaged.
No artwork was damaged and no-one was injured, according to the Fire Brigade.
Fire investigators are at the scene to find out what caused the blaze.
The National Gallery in Trafalgar Square contains one of the greatest collections of paintings in the world, including works by Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt and Van Gogh.
