Animated film Finding Nemo has become the fastest selling DVD and video of all time.
The film sold more than eight million copies in the first day of US release, beating the record held by Spider-Man.
Nemo is the most profitable cartoon in US cinema history and the biggest hit of the year at US box offices.
"You can't have great DVD without great film, and people know what great entertainment it is," said the DVD's producer, Bill Kinder, of Pixar.
Finding Nemo was made by Pixar, the studio behind Toy Story and Monsters Inc, and is about a fish's underwater search for his son.
'Exceptional'
It features the voices of actors Albert Brooks and Ellen DeGeneres.
Brooks said: "I believe that the creators did an exceptional job from beginning to end, and the extras on the DVD are actually special."
The DVD set includes a Jean-Michael Cousteau documentary about the Great Barrier Reef, an early Pixar short film, Knick Knack, and a preview of their next release, The Incredibles.
Finding Nemo took almost $340m (£200m) at box offices in the US and Canada, making it more popular than the year's other biggest hits - Pirates of the Caribbean, The Matrix Reloaded and Bruce Almighty.
Bob Chapek, head of Disney's Buena Vista Home Entertainment group, said: "Some of our customers have told us they sold three times what they projected on day one.
"We're aggressively making as many copies as possible, but it is likely that some of our major accounts may go out of stock."
