United got off the the perfect start with a hard-fought win over Millwall, thanks to a double from David Healy.
Pre-Match
Kevin Blackwell's first team selection of the 2005/06 season contains no surprises, being the same side that started in the final pre-season game against Barnsley - with the exception of Neil Sullivan who starts instead of Ian Bennet in goal.
Three of the seven summer signings started, the combination of Dan Harding and Eddie Lewis made for a totally new left flank, whilst Robbie Blake and David Healy is a new partnership upfront.
At the back, Sean Gregan appears more than happy to partner Paul Butler whilst Harding looked as if he had played for United at left-back all his life.
It was by anybody's standards a strong Championship side, and it still has the likes of Steve Stone and Rob Hulse to come.
The Match
Leeds started well with Healy and Blake constantly looking to make breaks and giving their markers a real headache, but for the best part of the early stages there was just a lot of huff and puff from both sides.
On nine minutes Harding put a challenge in to stop Hayles from finding space for the shot inside the area, and then Gregan put in a good block on Jody Morris to do the same.
The first real shot of the game didn't come until the 13th minute when Robbie Blake sent Eddie Lewis on a run and the winger beat the keeper with his shot from the edge of the area but couldn't quite get enough accuracy on it to open the scoring.
A handball by Josh Simpson five yards short of the penalty box gave United a free kick that didn't produce the best rehearsed free-kick routine ever seen at Elland Road. Robbie Blake, Eddie Lewis and Jermaine Wright all looked to take it but all three ran towards the ball and stopped.
When Blake eventually did hit the ball he managed to win United a corner, and from it Healy was just over with a header from Lewis's ball in.
Most of United's attacking play came down the left hand side through Eddie Lewis's crosses into the area for Healy and Blake, and he had a major part in the opening goal of the game after 27 minutes.
The USA international first saw his low cross towards Healy inside the penalty area hacked away for a corner, he took it himself and put a hanging cross into a crowded penalty area that was inadvertently headed towards goal by a Millwall defender where Healy met it and hooked the ball over his shoulder and into the back of the net.
Blake brought a good save out of Andy Marshall in the Millwall goal just after the half hour mark with a 25-yard free-kick.
At half-time it was a case of so far so good for Leeds United 2005-06.
No changes for either side at half-time, Leeds carried on where they left off in the first half by controlling the play and creating all the chances.
The first one came when Eirik Bakke burst into the box with a strong run, and although temporarily held up by a challenge, managed to win the ball back and forced a great save out of the keeper.
Shaun Derry nearly became the first Leeds player to be booked this season when he went flying into former Whites player Jody Morris and sent him crashing to the ground. The referee let him off with a warning.
Leeds found themselves pegged back on the hour mark when Millwall earned an equaliser through Don Hutchison, the former West Ham man who had only just completed his move to The New Den 48 hours before.
The goal began down the right hand side where former Huddersfield defender JamieVincent got the better of Harding and put in a low ball into the middle of the 18-yard box where it was smashed home on the volley by Hutchison.
Leeds then had a real battle on their hands to ensure what had begun as a dream start to the season did not turn sour.
David Healy was the first player to receive a yellow card for a late challenge on Vincent.
Leeds got their noses back in front via the penalty spot after Eirik Bakke was brought down by Marvin Elliott about a yard inside the area.
Healy showed just how to finish from the spot with a superbly taken penalty. Even though the keeper guessed the right way, there was no way he was able to stop Healy's drive.
On 75 minutes Blackwell made his first change, with Michael Ricketts coming on and Robbie Blake, who didn't manage to play a full game in pre-season, making way. Four minutes later and Frazer Richardson made his entrance into the game, replacing Jermaine Wright.
Millwall had a chance five minutes after the United goal when Adrian Serioux found himself with a clear sight of goal, but Sullivan made a comfortable save.
Bakke was inches away from making it 3-1 when he chased a return ball from Healy into the area, and as he stretched he was just a little bit short of poking the ball past the oncoming keeper with his outstretched boot.
In the end a third goal wasn't needed, and Leeds began just as they intended to.
