Steven Gerrard's future as a Liverpool player has been cast into doubt again, with reports suggesting contract talks have been broken off.
The Reds responded to reports in the Sunday press which stated they were looking to offload their captain, by insisting the England international star was pivotal to Rafa Benitez's thinking.
However, widespread reports on Monday are claiming Gerrard's relationship with Benitez has grown increasingly strained and that the pair had a bust-up at The Reds' Melwood training ground.
Gerrard is also believed to be smarting at Liverpool's failure to match his demands, with reports suggesting he has informed his agent to cease negotiations with The Reds' paymasters.
Gerrard has two years remaining on his present contract and said in the immediate aftermath of Liverpool's UEFA Champions League victory over Milan that he could not see himself moving on from Anfield.
Liverpool have made the right noises with regard to extending the 25-year-old's contract, but media reports on Monday would appear to suggest that Gerrard could be heading for pastures new this summer.
Gerrard is one of the hottest properties in world football and there are sure to be a clutch of teams monitoring the situation with interest.
Chelsea failed to land Gerrard last summer, but Jose Mourinho is a huge admirer of the midfielder and could well renew his interest, while Real Madrid may well see Gerrard as the man to bolster their midfield.
