David Trezeguet's sensational brace helped Juventus to their first win of 2008, conquering Livorno 3-1.
This was a tough match to call, as Juve were dropping off the Scudetto pace with two straight draws, while Livorno were unbeaten in nine. The Bianconeri also stuttered in the Coppa Italia midweek, fighting back for a late 2-2 draw against an Inter side that played with 10 men for 85 minutes.
Gigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini, Jonathan Zebina, Mauro Camoranesi and Jorge Andrade were injured with Jean-Alain Boumsong completing his transfer to Lyon. The home side were without Martin Bergvold, Nico Pulzetti, Fausto Rossini and former Juve man Giuliano Giannichedda, but were coming off two straight wins.
Juve hadn't lost here since March 1941, but David Trezeguet had an early scare when he had two Livorno players fall on top of him, though he was able to continue after treatment on his shoulder.
Christian Molinaro was stopped for a debatable offside position as he ran on to Cristiano Zanetti's searching pass.
Livorno had the first real scoring opportunity after 16 minutes in a stunning chance. Giovanni Pasquale sprung the offside trap just past the centre circle, Emanuele Belardi beat away his shot and then Francesco Tavano's follow-up was charged down in a chaotic move.
Soon after, Juve went close as well. Alessandro Del Piero was clear on goal and as Marco Amelia came rushing out, toe-poked the ball just past the near post of an open net.
The Amaranto kept pushing at a shaky Bianconeri defence and Belardi just about got hold of the ball with two opponents diving in to challenge. It was an open game and Amelia got down well to block Pavel Nedved's volley into the ground.
The deadlock was broken on the half-hour mark with Trezeguet's first goal since before Christmas. The Frenchman was kept onside by Alessandro Grandoni to whack a right-foot angled drive past Amelia into the far bottom corner.
Jose Luis Vidigal pounced on a Molinaro error to test Belardi with a powerful effort at the near post, then the former Reggina goalkeeper also plucked a Vidigal diving header out of the air.
Molinaro did brilliantly to close down Diego Tristan as he ran on to Tavano's through ball.
Straight after the restart Del Piero hesitated and failed to make the most of his chance, allowing the home defence to recover. The captain made up for the error moments later, as he sprung the offside trap inside his own half on Zanetti's pass, sprinted towards the goal and hit a sliding left-foot finish between Amelia's legs.
Livorno were reduced to 10 men on 54 minutes, as Daniele De Vezze picked up his second yellow card for a foolish and evident handling offence. He had been booked only five minutes earlier and the gesture stopped the ball from sparking a counter-attack.
Trezeguet put the result beyond all doubt with an absolutely sensational goal. Raffaele Palladino dribbled down the left and Trez dummied for Del Piero to flick the ball over the defence and it was met by a spectacular volley.
Livorno wanted a penalty when a free kick struck Zanetti's arm in the defensive wall, but it was close to his body. Soon after the referee waved play on for Vidigal's handling offence as well.
Dario Knezevic bravely intervened to stop substitute Vincenzo Iaquinta tapping in Palladino's low cross.
Tavano was incredibly unlucky on 78 minutes and should have got Livorno back into it. His free kick cracked against the inside of the near post and rolled all the way across the line to go out!
Juve did not heed the warning and moments later did concede. Erjon Bogdani combined with Nico Pulzetti to smash his angled drive into the far corner.
Amelia was at full stretch to get a hand to Antonio Nocerino's snapshot from the edge of the box.
