this time last week. It's easy to lose track of the news. So at the end of the week, it's good to keep an eye on some of those things which shouldn't go unnoticed. 1. Michael Howard is the first Jewish party leader in the UK, except Benjamin Disraeli, who was baptised as a child. 2. Take heart, IDS. Winston Churchill also wrote a novel - a typical Victorian Ruritanian romance - which was slated by the critics when it was published in 1990. 3. If Guy Fawkes' gunpowder had exploded, Westminster Hall and Abbey would have been destroyed, as well as Parliament - he used 25 times the amount of explosive he needed. 4. Greyhounds' blood is remarkable in that it can be matched to that of any other breed, and they do not get blood-transmitted diseases. 5. There are now 60 million rats in the UK - that's one for every man, woman and child. 6. Russia is the world's biggest producer of oil. 7. The Ford Escort is the UK's most frequently stolen car - nearly 7,000 have been taken this year, followed by 5,300 Ford Fiestas and 4,400 Vauxhall Astras. 8. Agoraphobia is not simply a fear of open spaces - for some sufferers, panic attacks are triggered by their distance from home. (Thanks to the BBC's One Life documentary.) 9. One in five children in the UK waiting to be adopted doesn't receive a single inquiry from a family wanting to take them home. 10. Stabbing is the most common method of murder in England and Wales, accounting for one-third of all killings.
