Day four of the championship saw the Bianconeri, looking for a third straight win in the championship, play host to Modena at the Olimpico. Zebina was making his return to the line-up after a lengthy injury lay off, while Deschamps also welcomed back captain Del Piero, unavailable against Crotone, and Trezeguet in attack. Balzaretti and Camoranesi were given a place in the starting line-up for the second game in succession, and Paro made his return to the centre of midfield in place of Giannichedda. Juventus started brightly, both Boumsong and Kovac going close early on from Camoranesi’s dangerous set-pieces. The Croatian defender was called into action at the other end in the 8th minute, hurling himself at the ball to make the block after Bentivoglio had found some space in the box. The Bianconeri controlled possession, switching the play from left to right in search of an opening but Modena were pressing hard to deny the home side space in the final third. In the 26th minute Camoranesi sent another curling set piece in towards Boumsong at the back post, but once again there was no final product. Seconds later though, Zebina looped a diagonal ball in between the defenders, Trezeguet raced in and sent a dipping header towards goal but his effort was just a few inches too high. Juve remained on the attack and three minutes later, Balzaretti sent a dangerous low cross in towards Trezeguet. The striker raced in with an outstretched foot but Frezzolini was there in time to collect down low. Pinardi was causing trouble on the counter-attack but it was Juventus who were to draw first blood, Trezeguet latching on to a deft Balzaretti chip into the box and poking the ball home to open the scoring in the 38th minute (1-0). Four minutes later, the Bianconeri doubled their lead. Del Piero released Trezeguet out on the left with a clever pass, the Frenchman raced in towards the area and unselfishly centred the ball to the edge of the six yard box; Del Piero sprinted in between two defenders and hammered the ball home to score his 199th goal for Juventus (2-0). Buffon was forced into action for the first time on the stroke of half-time, diving to his left to deny Pinardi from outside the area. The save was virtually the last action of the half and Juventus marched into the changing rooms at the interval with a two goal lead. Birindelli replaced Zebina at half-time and five minutes after the restart Juventus were back on the attack. Paro found Trezeguet on the edge of the area with a clever pass, the striker controlled with his chest and unleashed a powerful half-volley towards goal; his effort skipped just wide of the left post but Juve had signalled their desire for a third early on. They came even closer on the hour mark; having plucked a defence-splitting pass from Paro out of the air and rounded Frezzolini, Del Piero saw his effort cleared on the goal line. In the 64th minute Camoranesi made way for Marchionni but only two minutes later Modena almost pulled one back, Centurioni heading just over Buffon’s bar from a curling Pinardi set-piece. The Bianconeri answered back in fine style; in the 70th minute, Zanetti played a delightful ball in to Marchionni on the back post, the winger controlled skilfully and rolled the ball back to an unmarked Trezeguet on the edge of the six yard box. The Frenchman had the easiest of finishes as the Bianconeri made it 3-0. Just three minutes later Nedved supplied the fourth, catching Frezzolini off-guard and heading the ball home from a fine Paro cross (4-0). Giannichedda replaced Zanetti in the 76th minute, the third and final tactical change from Deschamps, but Modena already looked like a beaten side. Juve passed around comfortably in midfield, happy to keep possession and wind down the clock. Kovac made a great intervention in the 89th minute, denying Pinardi a chance on goal in the area but the Bianconeri held on to keep their second clean sheet in a row.
