Serie A Week 38 - 14/5/06 (14.00 UK)
Stadio Sant'Elia
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While Nedo Sonetti’s men can expect a warm reception for their final match of a tough season, the holidays can’t come fast enough for Inter who won’t relish the trip to the Stadio Sant’Elia.
The Rossoblu looked drained in last weekend’s 2-0 defeat against Udinese and have every right to be. When Sonetti took over in November the Sardinians looked doomed, but the experienced tactician has worked wonders and guided the Isolani smoothly to safety.
Honduran hit-man David Suazo can expect the hero treatment as he plays what is almost certainly his last game for Cagliari – without his staggering tally of 21 goals Serie B would surely be beckoning.
After such pre-season optimism, it’s been another disappointing campaign for the Nerazzurri. Roberto Mancini’s side look favourites to secure the Coppa Italia, but after a third-placed finish and Champions League elimination, that will be little consolation.
A draw would be a satisfactory result for both sides and is never out of the question at the Sant’Elia – Cagliari have the dubious honour of leading Serie A in home draws, with 10. By contrast, Inter’s 1-1 draw with Siena last weekend was their first at the San Siro this term.
Antonio Langella will miss out as will the suspended Daniele Conti, but Sonetti has an otherwise full squad.
Mancini looks likely to take the chance to blood some youngsters. Daniel Maa Boumsong and 17-year-old Swedish striker Goran Slavkovski will be given places on the bench. Francesco Toldo, Sinisa Mihajlovic, Alvaro Recoba and ex-Cagliari man Cristiano Zanetti are all injured. Juan Sebastian Veron has recovered from an ankle injury, while his fellow Argentine Nicolas Burdisso is suspended.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cagliari: Chimenti; Ferri, Bizera, Lopez, Pisano; Esposito, Budel, Abeijon, Gobbi; Suazo, Capone
Inter: Julio Cesar; J. Zanetti, Cordoba, Materazzi, Cesar; Stankovic, Pizarro, Kily Gonzalez; Figo, Cruz, Martins
