Serie A Week 37 - 7/5/06 (14.00 UK)
Cruz 60 (I), Gastaldello 94 (I)
Stadio Giuseppe Meazza
Inter were caught in stoppages by little Siena for their first home draw of the season.
With third place already secure and this tie sandwiched between the Coppa Italia Final matches with Roma, Roberto Mancini took the opportunity to rest several stars and blood a few young talents in the experimental 4-3-3 system.
Siena will make a fresh start next season with Coach Luigi De Canio already confirming his departure, but he wanted to end on a positive note following last week's 3-0 mauling at the hands of Juventus. Paolo Foglio was suspended, with Rej Volpato, Tomas Locatelli, Erjon Bogdani and Roberto D'Aversa injured.
Julio Cruz brought a tough save out of Antonio Mirante with a fierce left-foot strike after 60 seconds of play, but it was a rare highlight, as the tempo in this first half was very slow.
Esteban Cambiasso found space and cut back for Cruz, whose finish was off target. A Pierre Wome touched-on free kick was powerful but central.
Siena also threatened, as Simone Vergassola set Enrico Chiesa running and Julio Cesar had to rush out and close down the veteran hitman.
Matteo Paro failed to finalise a move created by Chiesa, while a Kily Gonzalez shot was well saved.
There may have been nothing to be gained from this game, but a scuffle still broke out before half-time. Mirante parried a Maa Boumsong piledriver and Cruz came sliding in very late in a bid to get the loose ball, effectively kneeing the goalkeeper in the head at full force. The Argentine was booked for dangerous play and Mirante was able to continue after treatment.
Into the second half, Chiesa brought a tough save out of Julio Cesar, as Siena slowly increased in confidence at San Siro.
The Nerazzurri finally broke through on the hour mark, as Maa Boumsong threaded through for Cruz, who unleashed a precise left-foot drive into the low far corner of the net. With his 14th goal, he becomes Inter's top scorer in Serie A this season.
Nicolas Andre Burdisso slid into the back of Molinaro, but Siena's penalty appeals were waved away, while Cesar and Obafemi Martins wasted good chances.
Inter debuted Slavkovski in the final minutes and, at the age of 17 years and one month, he became the youngest ever Nerazzurri player in Serie A history.
It was nonetheless a very tense match and another brawl broke out with Burdisso sent off.
Siena drew level with the last kick of the game, as a corner kick found Gastaldello at the back post.
