Serie A Week 36 - 30/4/06 (14.00 UK)
Materazzi og 91 (E)
Stadio Castellani
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A comical Marco Materazzi own goal in stoppages handed Empoli the victory at the end of a disappointing match.
The Tuscans were all but certain of their Serie A safety going into the game, but wanted one final win to be sure, while the Nerazzurri tried to end their season on a high. Vittorio Tosto and the suspended Nicola Ascoli were out, but Francesco Tavano - who admitted he is eager for a move to Inter in the summer - recovered from a thigh problem to start.
Roberto Mancini had an injury crisis with Juan Sebastian Veron, Pierre Wome, Esteban Cambiasso, Cristiano Zanetti, Francesco Toldo, Sinisa Mihajlovic and Alvaro Recoba all out. He experimented again with the 4-3-3 system that had Luis Figo in a more advanced role.
Cesar Aparecido was fielded as a left-back and was put under a lot of early pressure by Antonio Busce' down that flank.
Sergio Almiron's long-range effort was off target, while Santiago Solari and Javier Zanetti had hopeful shots from distance.
The home side thought they had taken the lead on 16 minutes when Cesar was caught napping on Lucchini's cross, but Busce's header could only clip the crossbar.
Empoli were very unlucky in this game, as they lost both Lucchini and Tavano to injuries in the first half.
Figo's shot was precise, but didn't have enough power behind it to trouble Daniele Balli.
In first half stoppages, the Nerazzurri had their best chance of the period, as Javier Zanetti's effort was turned round the post by the goalkeeper.
Julio Cesar rushed out to close down Christian Rigano' and Lodi's curling attempt was not far over the bar.
Cruz, Almiron and Busce' also went close in this disappointing match, while Obafemi Martins turned his header off target.
David Pizarro's free kick was dealt with comfortably and it looked to be going towards an insipid 0-0 draw.
There was one final surprise for the crowd in the Stadio Castellani, as in stoppages Marco Materazzi aimed a backpass at his goalkeeper from distance without noticing Julio Cesar was well off his line and comically deposited the ball into his own net.
