Serie A Week 36 - 30/4/06 (14.00 UK)
Stadio Castellani
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Empoli welcome Inter to the Stadio Castellani looking for one final unexpected success that would guarantee Serie A survival, but face an Inter side desperate to avoid any further embarrassments.
Contrary to pre-season expectations, Empoli have virtually secured another season in Serie A thanks to a six game unbeaten run only ended by a 2-1 derby defeat against Fiorentina last weekend. Experienced Coach Gigi Cagni appears to have worked his magic but will be taking nothing for granted. He will urge his side to fight for at least a point rather than hope for Messina to falter.
Roberto Mancini claims that he has the faith of club President Massimo Moratti but his days appear to be numbered. After a miserable fortnight which saw the Nerazzurri crash out of the Champions League and lose to their Milan rivals, the season was destined to be a failure. A 4-0 win over Reggina may have temporarily appeased the disenchanted fans but the Beneamati’s job remains damage limitation.
The statistics are in Inter’s favour – they have only conceded 14 goals away from home all season whereas Empoli have the leakiest defence in the Division having let in 59 goals.
The hosts are without Vittorio Tosto who is injured for the season and the suspended Nicola Ascoli. Eighteen goal Francesco Tavano – who may line up on the other side of this fixture next season – is a doubt with a recurrence of his left thigh injury. Davide Moro returns after suspension.
Mancini has greater selection headaches. Juan Sebastian Veron, Francesco Toldo, Pierre Wome and Adriano – again in the Press for comments at the expense of Mancini and Veron – are injured. Sinisa Mihajlovic and Alvaro Recoba are out for the season. Esteban Cambiasso missed training for the funeral of his mother-of-law and may start on the bench.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Empoli: Balli; Raggi, Coda, Pratali, Lucchini; Almiron, Moro, Busce', Vannucchi, Tavano; Rigano'
Inter: Julio Cesar; J. Zanetti, Cordoba, Samuel, Favalli; Figo, C. Zanetti, Pizarro, Stankovic; Cruz, Martins
