Inter's hopes of snatching second place were hit badly by a 1-0 defeat at Parma as Fabio Simplico pounced on Pierre Wome's error, but it effectively clears the Gialloblu from the relegation battle.
The Nerazzurri tried to maintain their challenge for that second automatic Champions League berth, but had only ever won once at the Tardini and hoped Adriano would break through his goal-scoring crisis against his former club. Luis Figo was ruled out by injury, so Cesar Aparecido got the nod and Juan Sebastian Veron also faced his old side. Parma had won their last three on the trot, though Domenico Morfeo was carrying an injury.
Inter went close after less than four minutes of play, as Dejan Stankovic's glancing header from a corner kick was inches wide of both the far post and Esteban Cambiasso's foot.
Marco Marchionni's looping effort was round the top corner of the net, while another Stankovic strike was not far off target.
Alvaro Recoba cut back round his marker and saw his curling left-foot finish palmed away by Luca Bucci's outstretched hand.
A central Walter Samuel header was comfortably held, then Francesco Toldo smothered a Mark Bresciano attempt from the edge of the box.
A deflected Veron strike went out for a corner and from the resulting set-piece Bucci performed a fine save to parry Cesar's piledriver.
However, it was Parma who took the lead just before the break thanks to a woeful defensive error from Pierre Wome. Bernardo Corradi's counter-attack and cross seemed to be under control, but Wome's poor first touch allowed Fabio Simplicio to pounce and fire in from eight yards.
That move was also controversial, as Marco Materazzi hauled down Marchionni in the build-up and should perhaps have received his second yellow card.
Both sides came out fighting for the second half with saves on an Adriano missile from the edge of the area and Corradi's close-range half-volley at the near post.
Francesco Toldo flew to push Mark Bresciano's free kick out from under the crossbar on 52 minutes.
Parma were by no means sitting back on their lead and Toldo performed a stunning one-handed save to turn another powerful Bresciano strike round the near post.
Cambiasso had penalty appeals waved away for substitute Dessena's challenge. Bucci also smothered a hopeful long-distance effort from Stankovic.
Materazzi cut his lip during an accidental clash with Corradi and spent most of the second half playing with a large tissue gripped in his mouth.
Marchionni also tested Toldo, but Inter went close when Materazzi nodded Cesar's cross over the bar from their 13th corner kick of the game.
Recoba went for glory with a snapshot from distance that was well wide with his left foot. Adriano's glancing header from a Stankovic centre was also off target and the disappointed-looking Brazilian was replaced by Julio Ricardo Cruz straight after.
Roberto Mancini went for broke in the final 15 minutes, replacing full-back Wome with striker Obafemi Martins, moving Recoba over to the right flank.
Toldo fumbled the ball for a moment, but got it back under control as Parma captain Marchionni came tearing in. Stankovic and Ferronetti were both booked for a scuffle at the byline, as the Serb raised his knee to his ribs and the Parma man elbowed him in the stomach in retaliation.
Inter's best scoring opportunity of the second half came on 86 minutes, as Cruz's glancing header from a Recoba free kick was parried off Bucci's chest and the veteran goalkeeper managed to push away the loose ball before Cambiasso could slot in.
Bucci also smothered a direct Recoba set-piece soon after. Corradi was booked and will miss next week's game with Udinese.
Parma goalkeeper Luca Bucci may be 37 years old, but he showed the reflexes of a cat in stoppages when he leapt across the face of goal to fingertip away a marvellous Cambiasso header.
